Grok, the AI Chatbot, Now Accessible Free of Charge
In a recent update, xAI, the AI company behind the chatbot Grok, has made it freely accessible to X users. According to a report by The Verge, users are now allowed 10 free prompts every 2 hours, a feature previously exclusive to X Premium subscribers. Notably, xAI has just raised $6 billion per an SEC filing, bringing its total funding to $12 billion.
Grok: A Freemium Model
The update gives Grok a freemium model similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude. It’s a significant shift from the earlier model, where Grok was available only for X Premium members at a price starting at $8 a month or $84 a year.
“This new freemium model could potentially attract more users to the AI chatbot, offering a competitive edge in the AI market.”
However, there are some restrictions even in the freemium model. Users can generate 10 images for free every 2 hours, but are limited to analyzing only 3 images per day. To access more, users will need to subscribe to the service.
Initial Trials of the Free Model
TechCrunch had reported last month about X trialing a free version of Grok in certain countries, including New Zealand. It now appears that the company is expanding this model to a wider user base.

Concluding Thoughts
The shift towards a freemium model by xAI for Grok is an interesting development in the AI industry. It remains to be seen how this will affect the user base and the overall market dynamics. One thing is clear – AI chatbots are becoming more accessible and affordable, contributing to their increased adoption across various sectors.
