PUBG Creator’s Studio, PlayerUnknown Productions, Plans Multiple New Games

Published:

The gaming world hasn’t heard much from Brendan PlayerUnknown Greene, the creator of the globally recognized battle royale game PUBG, for a while. Recently, however, there’s been an announcement detailing the works of his studio, PlayerUnknown Productions, which includes multiple games leading up to a grand final project.

Prologue: Go Wayback!

The first game in this line up, Prologue: Go Wayback!, is an open-world survival game featuring a single player mode. The game was initially teased in 2021 and is expected to be launched in early access on Steam in 2025. The primary attraction of this game appears to be its machine-learning-driven terrain generation technology, which can instantly create millions of maps.

“With Prologue, we aim to engage players and introduce them to the emergent mechanics and expansive worlds we’re developing,” Greene stated.

In the meantime, to give players a taste of what’s to come, the studio is launching a free tech demo on Steam called Preface: Undiscovered World.

Building Blocks to Artemis

According to PlayerUnknown Productions, these games are not standalone projects but stepping stones towards a more ambitious game currently codenamed Artemis. This game is envisioned to be a massive multiplayer sandbox experience. While there was talk of NFT support in 2022, this aspect was not mentioned in the recent announcement.

“My vision for Artemis is challenging, but we plan to take it one step at a time and the three games aim to give us a solid tech foundation on which to scale up,” Greene elaborated.

The Journey Ahead

After Prologue, two more games are planned for release, each designed to overcome crucial technical challenges and bring the studio closer to the final product, Artemis. Greene first stepped away from PUBG in 2019 with a new studio, then known as PUBG Special Projects. In 2021, he announced his departure from Krafton, PUBG’s parent company, to go independent.

“Today, I’m excited to take the next step on my journey to create the kind of experience I’ve envisaged for years,” he expressed during his departure from Krafton.
